Waveform monitors are specialized oscilloscopes used to evaluate television signals. Waveform monitors display analog video signals (waveforms) at a horizontal and/or vertical rate. The signal is calculated based on the level of luminance of the motion picture appearing on the screen at that particular moment. Another common use of waveform monitors is during production. Different video cameras can detect the quality of light differently. This results in footage that is visually jarring when switching from one camera to the next in a multi-cam setup. Waveform monitors help ensure that this doesn't happen and that the footage is evenly toned across all the cameras.
